Alaska's Marmot Day (Lower-48 Groundhog Day)

  • Anchorage
  • Fairbanks
  • Palmer
  • Seward
  • Wasilla

Alaska's Marmot Day: In the Lower-48, February 2nd is "Groundhog Day", but in Alaska, thanks to the former governor and another Republican from Wasilla, Alaska, February 2nd is Marmot Day. This day was just put into effect last year (2010), and at this point it essentially doesn't mean anything.

It seems that Alaska doesn't have many (any?) groundhogs, so in an effort to have a day that is a little more meaningful here, this day in Alaska is "Marmot Day", apparently because we have a lot of marmots.

Radio Free Palmer

  • Palmer

I haven't figured out exactly what Radio Free Palmer is, but I just learned about them when I saw that they offered free internet access at one of the local coffee shops (Vagabond Blues).

According to their website, Radio Free Palmer:

Moving to Palmer, Alaska

  • Palmer
  • Wasilla

Sorry I haven't written much here lately, I've been busy, busy, busy. The most important news for this website is that I'm moving. I signed a lease on an apartment in Palmer, Alaska, and I'll be finishing the move-in process this week.

Somewhere around here I have a photo of the awesome view from the new apartment in Palmer ... wait ... here it is:

Over 150 Mat-Su dogs rescued and need help

  • Anchorage
  • News
  • Palmer
  • Wasilla

I'll skip all the details for now -- you can read them in the link below -- but the important thing is that over 150 malnourished Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes have been rescued from a negligent breeder in the Mat-Su Valley here in Alaska, and these dogs could really use your help. This includes thirty potentially very cute, furry, cuddly little puppies.

No signs about bridges freezing before roads

  • Anchorage
  • Palmer
  • Wasilla

Sorry I haven't taken any time to post updates here lately, I've been very busy. I'm trying to finish getting my "How I Sold My Business, A Personal Diary" book fully published online. Hopefully that will be completed soon, but it will most likely be offline most of the day today.

Alaska lunar eclipse photos

  • 2010 Trip to Alaska
  • Palmer
  • Wasilla

Unfortunately I don't have a good zoom lens for my Pentax K-x camera, so I wasn't able to get any great Alaska lunar eclipse photos last night. But, I did manage to eek out this small photo, and if you click on it, you'll see a much larger (4.4 MB) photo of the very clear Wasilla, Alaska sky last night:

Wasilla weather forecast, November, 5, 2010

  • Palmer
  • Wasilla

I need to look at the brochure again, but as I recall, it's not supposed to snow that much when you're north of Anchorage, Alaska. In areas south of Anchorage like the Kenai Peninsula and southeast Alaska, sure, it's supposed to snow a lot, but here in the Mat-Su Valley it's supposed to be cold and dry.

Well, not so far. Every day lately has had snow, or a good chance of snow. Here's the Wasilla snow forecast for roughly the next week:
