If you ever get the opportunity to drive on the dirt road that is Hatcher Pass, you'll encounter road conditions like this. Note: car rental companies don't like it if you drive their cars on roads like these, lol. The dirt road portion of Hatcher Pass usually opens some time in July, and closes in September, probably early September.

Here's a photo of me driving on the Dalton Highway in Alaska, on the way to Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay. As you can see, there's not much traffic on the Dalton Highway.

Here's a photo of a local road in Wasilla, Alaska in December, 2010. As you can see, the road is covered in snow, with ice under the snow, and this is the way the road will stay until March, or even April of 2011.

Here I am, just driving down the road somewhere in Canada in the middle of winter, and I come across a pack of Caribou on the side of the road. So glad to see them on the side of the road -- usually they stand in the middle of the road, which can be quite a surprise to all of us.

If you've never been in a blinding snowstorm, this photo will give you some idea of the visibility you can expect. Fortunately this was during the day; driving at night would have been impossible.

Driving from Seward to Anchorage, Alaska this spring I ran into a snow storm, and plenty of snow already on the road.
