Murder in Trapper Creek, Alaska

January 24, 2011

This is very disappointing to read, there was a murder in Trapper Creek, Alaska last night. The Anchorage Daily News reports that a Trapper Creek man, age 37, shot and murdered his neighbor, Robert Carey (age 66), and also shot his wife, Verna, who survived the shooting.

Shootings and murder in general are always upsetting, but this is also saddening to me for several other reasons. First, Trapper Creek is a quiet little community just north of Talkeetna, Alaska, where I lived in 2007. I just love that area of the country.

Second, I remember a young woman in Talkeetna telling me one time that there are very few killings in Alaska. I expressed a concern about everyone having guns in their homes, and she told me it really wasn't much of a problem. Yes, she said, there can be a lot of crime in certain parts of Alaska, but outside of Anchorage, it's rarely violent crime.

Followup

Following the first comment that was added below, I'd like to add my condolences to the family of the man who was murdered. Sometimes I get caught up in my own writing, and I forget something very, very important: Someone's like was just taken away from them. Again, my condolences.
